In this 2 vs 3 Atlantic division matchup, it pins two very good teams in Detroit and Boston. Detroit, the 2-time defending Stanley Cup champion, their season begins now. From the start of the season, they knew they'd be here, it was just a matter of where they'd place and who they would play. Boston, a little bit of a surprise, had a solid season, never relinquishing a top 3 spot all season.
Greekelite and Linde94 are trying to do what no other team in VG has ever done, win 3 straight championships. They brought back some old friends from the last championship in xTiDanKilleR--55, Fumancheezy_and MikeeTeeze. Three of the best at their positions in the last few seasons. The only monkey wrench there was Teeze. He moved out of the net this season and went D instead. They went and drafted a solid goalie in newsy001qc, who played a huge chunk of games for them. Early in the season, they went and made a move for Xx___Scoop___xX and as the trade deadline approached, they completed their roster by adding SWEETHOMECHlCAGO, Carter_11-c and ELC'd former NHL vet Jade_Dragoon_. According to Greek, this is his final playoff run as he'll be handing the keys to the castle to someone new next season.
The Bruins were taken over this season by former NHL owner oriolerules44, who last owned the Dallas Stars in season 13. He brought in CFairman7 to captain the team, it's his 1st go around in the NHL this season. This team went through some overhaul through the season to end with the roster they have now. Only WestSideHockey remained from day 1 on the roster. A lot of their moves were made early on, picking up gardenstatenj in net, Jmm420, jlm1410 and kinglyme89 to bolster the offense and IceAJ420, GonzoArmstrong and x_jack24bauer_x to provide defense. This team got out of the gate hot, going 12-3 through the first run around the eastern teams. Boston floated between 2nd and 3rd in the Atlantic all year and went 4-0 vs. Toronto to keep the Leafs underneath them.
Detroit's offense can be overwhelming. They can beat several different ways. They play the rush well. They can control the TOA game. They cycle and use behind the net as good as any team in the league and they can attack from either side. Tidan is a rock at the center position. Considered one of the best in the league there, his 62 goals lead the squad. Scoop is their playmaker, doubling his assists over goals with a team leading 64 assists. Greek and Linde on the wings gives defenses nightmares trying to breakout and their play in and around the opponent's net is smooth. This group is scary good when given the space. And even when there isn't space, they create it.
When Boston made moves and added Kingly, Jmm and jlm to join Oriole up front, this team clicked. Kingly turned his season around coming over to the Bruins, ending as the team leader in goals (85) and PPG (2.42). Oriole with 70 assists adapted well with the new group as Jmm and jlm joined to solidify the depth on the roster. All 4 guys are over 2 PPG and move the puck fast, spreading out their opponents and creating better chances.
EDGE – EVEN
The Red Wings defense is a game changer. Fumancheesy plays LD and Teeze on RD, these 2 are lethal. Cheesy with a 1.68 PPG, one of the best in the NHL. He only played 37 games and amassed 62 points and 15 goals in that time. Very impressive. Teeze has a 0.96 PPG so to say they use the D is an understatement. Carter is a great puck mover. Good stick handling and vision, he was a great addition. SWEETHOME is purely a defensive first type but a good shut down depth player on the right side.
The Bruins have some depth at the defense position with as much 5 guys getting solid games there. None of them are real offensive threats like Detroit is but, JackBauer is a good positional LD. Gonzoarmstrong is probably their most dynamic as he adds some offense and is smart with the puck. Fairman leads the group in goals (7) and +/- by a wide margin with a +45. IceAJ and Markz are solid with a +18 combined in their games played. This group is going to have to really lock down and be a step ahead of Detroit's offense to give their group chances to take out the champ.
EDGE – DETROIT RED WINGS
Detroit has 2 very good options in net. Newsy has carried this team here with his 61 GP, 37 wins and 8 SO. Snagging Jade out of the AHL was a steal. After disappearing from the NHL a few seasons ago, Jade re-emerged and immediately made an impact with the cup champs. Going 5-0 with .842 S% and 2 SO in 5 games makes you wonder who will get the net come big game time.
Gardenstate and Westside seemingly shared the net for the Bruins. Garden had 23 wins and Westside had 22. Westside will most likely be the # 1 with better stats over all. He led the team with a 2.24 GAA and an .809 S%.
